A few weeks ago, I had the absolute privilege of capturing a special milestone in a young woman's life—a moment that symbolized growth, resilience, and the beauty of new beginnings. My client, who I affectionately refer to as B.A.(Brand Ambassador), approached me with an idea that deeply resonated with my heart as a mother: she wanted to celebrate her oldest daughter, Nat, for her incredible journey over the past year.

Nat had made bold choices—choosing to pursue her GED, land her first job, learn to drive, buy her first car, and even chase her passion for theater. These aren’t just small wins; they’re monumental moments that mark the beginning of her adult life. As a photographer and a mother, I was thrilled to be part of this celebration, to capture not just her beauty but her journey.

We selected downtown Sandpoint as the location for her senior portrait session—a place with a lot of charm and variety, perfect for capturing the many sides of Nat in just over an hour. And trust me, we nailed it. But the day wasn’t without its challenges. On the morning of the shoot, Nat was feeling down after having some trouble with tests she needed to retake. As a teenager, setbacks can feel monumental. But as we started shooting, you could see the shift in her—her confidence blossomed, and soon she was all smiles, radiating strength and joy right before the rain decided to make an appearance!

Nat’s senior portrait session wasn’t just about taking beautiful pictures—it was about truly seeing her. I could tell from her reaction that this experience gave her something more than just images; it gave her a sense of being seen and celebrated, a feeling that’s rare but so essential, especially for teenagers. Last week, Boushie Babes, I dove into the world of Joy, so it feels only right to turn our attention to Confidence this week. Now, let's be real—who doesn't want to look and feel confident? We all do, right? But how often do we actually feel confident? If you're anything like me, there are days when you have to dig deep and, yes, fake it till you make it. Sound familiar? I can't be the only one riding that wave!

Here's the thing: confidence isn't just a feeling; it's an attitude. The dictionary defines confidence as "a feeling of self-assurance arising from one's appreciation of one's own abilities or qualities." It's about knowing your worth, and even more importantly, it's about showing it to the world. But let's face it—confidence can be elusive. There are times when it feels like you're wearing a mask, projecting strength you don't quite believe in yet.

Take it from me: in most of the images you see where I look strong and confident, I'm usually not feeling that way. At least, not at first. It's only after I strike a few poses or express a particular emotion that I start to embody the confidence I'm portraying. That's the magic of photography—it allows you to step into a version of yourself that you might not fully believe in just yet.

Now, you might be wondering why I have you mimic my poses in the studio, why I ask you to mirror me. It’s not just for fun, though it can be! It’s all about something called mirror neurons. Here’s a bit of science for you: mirror neurons are a group of neurons that fire both when an individual performs an action and when they observe the same action performed by someone else. These neurons are key players in how we learn through imitation and are deeply connected to the empathy we feel when we see others' emotions.

So, when I ask you to copy my movements, I'm actually helping your brain trigger the same emotional response that I'm showing. This means when you mirror my confident stance, your brain starts to fire up those confidence neurons, and before you know it, you're not just looking confident—you are confident. Pretty cool, right?

There’s a real science behind what I do, which is why it works. So, when I tell you to mirror me, trust that it's more than just play-acting. It’s about aligning your body language with your inner strength, even if it takes a few tries to get there. This week in class, we dove into the art of coaching for genuine, authentic joy. Yes, you can actually coach for joy in pictures and capture that real, unfiltered happiness. I often hear from clients that my photos don’t look posed—they look happy, genuine, and not forced. And trust me, my goal is always to avoid that "constipated" look or the overly cheesy smile we've all done a million times when someone says "cheese."

Genuine Joy is a state of being that allows one to experience feelings of intense, long-lasting happiness and satisfaction in life. Being able to capture that joy in my clients is priceless. In our day-to-day lives, we rarely get to see ourselves in moments of pure joy—everyone else does, but we often miss it in ourselves. Seeing that joy reflected in a photograph is a powerful experience.

There are different levels of joy too. It can range from a subtle level 1 to an exuberant level 10, and even beyond. Some of us are more level-one types, while others can go from 1 to 10+ in a matter of minutes. The beauty of it is that there’s no right or wrong way to express joy—all the flavors are okay.

Here are some tips I have to help bring out those genuine smiles:

1. The Fake Laugh: Yes, just do it. As weird as it sounds, it works. It starts with a fake laugh, and soon enough, it turns into real laughter.

2. Breathe: Most of the time, we hold our breath when taking photos, making our smiles look forced. Take a deep breath and relax.

3. Part Your Lips: Ever so slightly parting your lips can make your smile look more natural and less posed.

A Love Story Captured: Callie and Her Hubby’s Anniversary Shoot

This week, we're shining a spotlight on a truly special session with our brand ambassador, Callie, and her husband, Stefan. They came in to celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary and over 20 years of love and connection. This July, they honored the studio with their presence for a simple, elegant black set affair that turned into something truly magical.

Now, let me give you some background. Callie has been working with me for the last few years, but Stefan, like many larger men, is a bit shy and not too fond of having his picture taken. It has taken a lot of coaxing and patience to get him comfortable enough to step into the studio. Trust me, it wasn’t easy. We finally nailed down a date that worked for all of our busy schedules, and we stuck to it. Despite panic attacks, broken zippers, clothing that didn't quite fit, and many other little hiccups, we pushed through. And boy, am I glad we did!

With some coaching and direction, we captured some truly amazing portraits. The connection, heat, and passion between Callie and Stefan were palpable. Even for a basic couples session, things definitely heated up in the studio. It was an honor to witness and capture their love and passion, especially knowing how much it took to get Stefan to this point. After years of trying to get them in the studio together, the timing was finally right, and I was beyond grateful for the opportunity.

In the days leading up to their session, I studied hard. I watched the videos from Stripped Down and reviewed the posing flows to ensure everything was fresh in my mind. This preparation helped set the mood for some truly emotive images. Fully clothed, with all the feels, we created a series of portraits that spoke volumes about their deep connection and enduring love.

Can you guess what the homework was this week? Yes, selfies! That’s right, I had to take selfies, or sometimes hand the camera over to my assistant, to demonstrate the core emotions we aim for in our sessions. This exercise helps me coach you, my clients, to express those same emotions and even more when you step into my studio.

So, what emotions are we covering this week? Joy, confidence (yes, you can coach for confidence!), coy flirtation, longing, states of pleasure, and states of desire. Sounds interesting, right? Like, how and what? No way! But trust me, after a few years of practice, it becomes second nature.

The fun part of this assignment is the continuous learning and growth it brings. By practicing these emotions, I not only grow as an artist but also give you, my clients, the agency to be who you are in front of the camera. It's about capturing the real you, your genuine emotions, and your unique beauty.

Embracing the Artist Within: My Journey Beyond the Lens

This week I am writing about my artistic journey as a photographer, as many of you know I am taking the art of emotion stripped down again, and with that comes class and homework, and we just did the art part of the class where we go over the history of art, and review paintings, dance, and just art in more than just photography. This part inspires me so much every year, I get so inspired I usually freeze up for a bit and can't do anything, this year though that hasn't happened, I just keep flowing. I have shot with my ambassadors already and gotten my homework done for the most part and it has been amazing, I just need to do my selfies, I have one of them coming in with her hubby on Saturday for a couples session for that part of my homework since I wanted to challenge myself and up my game this year since it the last round and my 5th year of class.

I have been getting amazing wildlife shots that will be shared on my pages and my fine art page for sale as well, and of course you can reach out to order prints from me too. But I digress on the artist's journey, we all know I love thinking outside the box, I hate the dam box really... I do. So this year I threw the box and all the rules out the window and lived... I became an artist.

The prints will be on my Fine art page for sale, and you can reach out for prints, but these will not be cheap folks, these are art, and speak to the heart. I will also have a complete book for sale soon, if you want one just reach out. Each one of these is a single shot, my ISO was 100, shutter 2"5, F8.0 for the aperture.

The long exposure should tell you it was a night shot, and a form of light painting so to speak, and man I will never see them the same way again ever. To me, the ones that speak to me seem out of this world, and ethereal for sure, some look something out of the movie The Golden Compass, some out of a Sci-Fi movie, or an 80’s laser light show. I have won a scholarship to attend the final round of The Art of Emotion in Photography: Stripped Down with the incredibly talented Denise Birdsong. This means I’ll be diving back into online classes this summer and continuing into the fall. With your support, I even hope to attend one of the workshops in person—fingers crossed!

For those who have been with us from the start, you know that Stripped Down has been a significant part of my journey for the last four years. I've been taking this course annually, sometimes even twice a year, to push myself and grow as an artist. This will be my fifth and final round, as Denise is moving on to other exciting ventures. I am determined to make the most of this experience, pushing myself beyond my comfort zone and bringing you all along on this journey.

Stripped Down is not just a course; it’s a transformative experience. It’s about pushing boundaries, exploring the depths of emotion, and capturing the raw, beautiful essence of our subjects. As I prepare to embark on this final round, I reflect on the incredible growth I've experienced and the countless lessons I've learned.

One of the highlights of the course is Selfie Week, which is coming up soon. I’m already brainstorming creative ideas for this year. I recently did headshots, so it's time to think outside the box and capture something unique. It’s an opportunity for me to experiment and express myself in new ways, and I can’t wait to share the results with you.

Through Stripped Down, I’ve learned so many things that weren’t even part of the official curriculum. From nuanced posing tips that you just pick up over time, to lens and gear recommendations tailored to my shooting style—like the beloved "nifty-fifty" lens. I’ve picked up editing tricks, such as perfecting skin tones and mastering masking techniques, and even leveraging AI to streamline my workflow. The actual course content has transformed how I coach and direct my subjects, making posing a breeze when it used to be a challenge just two years ago.

But this journey isn’t just about me. It’s about all of us—those of you who have supported me, and those who are brave enough to embark on your own journey of self-love and discovery. We meet at the Valley Mall in Spokane, or we Zoom, where we go over how you want to be styled for your session, I give ideas of things to buy or bring from home for your session, and I tell you to bring it all, cause the day of we never know till then and better to have more than not enough. On the day of your session, our team provides professional hair and makeup, setting the stage for an experience that transcends the ordinary. We always tell our clients if you don’t love your hair and make-up, we start over, cause if you don’t love your hair and make-up, you won’t love your images and that’s a hard pass for us here at Boushie Babes.

Unlike the standard waiting period, your images are ready for viewing and ordering on the same day. I encourage my clients to pay in full because I love getting them the images as soon as possible. Once final payment is received digital galleries are sent out within 72 hours!!! Printed products are delivered within 2 weeks or less making it one of the fastest turnaround times in the north west!!!

Boushie Babes Photography is an exclusive experience, with only 5-6 boudoir sessions granted per month. This exclusivity allows me to devote my undivided attention to your journey, ensuring you receive the guidance and support needed to truly shine. This also allows the fast turnaround time, and for me to keep everything but the printing of products in-house, meaning I am the only one viewing your images other than my print lab, unless you allow us to share of course. I take extreme care of your amazing images and hold them with the utmost respect and care.

They're bonuses that make it possible to serve more while working smarter, not harder.
